candid conversations with Dr. Denise M. Lowe
about covid 19 and the return to school
On returning to in-person learning for educators:
Dr. Denise M. Lowe: Given the seriousness of this pandemic; how easy it is for school children to transmit the virus unknowingly and the distractions this can all cause to learning, I believe we should wait until January 2021 before reopening schools. It's too risky for stakeholders right now. This is the time for leaders to reshape, rethink and re-imagine schooling. Distance learning is here to stay. K-12 online schooling and learning has been around successfully for over 25 years.

- Shortening the school year. Do we really need 180 days of in-person schooling?
- Project based learning. Give students a month long project, which is fully interdisciplinary and based on relevant, real world connections.
- Students attend in-person learning 2 days per week. They are given an opportunity to experience real world learning and apprenticeship, internships and travel.
